Our new home has a sense of calm that is difficult to describe. Trix has never been as relaxed as she is here in Alaska. Clementine is equally relaxed. Audrey seems to love her new window – she has already sprouted a new whorl of branches. My home office is set up with all my references in place. Our U-Haul boxes arrived a few weeks after moving in and everything is falling into place. I listen to loons, sandhill cranes, ravens, chickadees, Swainson’s thrush, fixed wing and float planes while I work.

We’ve had a visit from “Buddy” the moose who attempted to walk into our garage and a Cow with twin calves who meandered through just the other evening.

We have now been here for nearly one month. The weather has been great with the warmest day being 80F. Right now, it is 56F and raining. The rain is welcomed as it is getting the fire danger lower after so many dry days. Adjusting to near 24-hour daylight has been relatively smooth but we find it difficult to wind down in the evening at times. Last night was the first time we truly had “dark” with the heavy cloud cover and rain.

I worked in the field for a few days and am constantly amazed by the beauty around every corner. I often find myself saying, “Wow! I can’t believe we live here.” We are surrounded by mountains, cold water rivers that we are learning to read (they are a bit different than Michigan). When I head out, bear spray, inReach, my cell phone, and a comprehensive first aid pack (thank you for helping me build it so long ago, Jenelle) are with me.

The air is clean. The breeze, cool. The water, cold. And I am happy.

Alaska is truly becoming our home.
Thank you for sharing this journey with me. I hope you enjoyed the posts.
