The Big Move: Day 6

At least we are only staying one night.

It was another long driving day. We going from Coutts to Whitecourt, AB. It was 460 miles (740 km) which would take approximately 7 hours and 22 minutes driving the speed limit and non-stop. Add on bio-breaks, fuel stops, driving a bit slower hauling the trailer, and then the rain. Not just a little rain. Downpours. Our Gold Springs campground neighbor had warned us the night before that heavy rains were coming and were expected to be in the area for three days. We needed to get north of it.

Now add on driving through Calgary. I had figured out a route to avoid Edmonton but couldn’t avoid Calgary. But we had left early enough in the day that we would be at the next site before dark. We started to get north of the rain bands right as we were getting out of Calgary. Checking the radar reaffirmed it. We were almost out of the rain.

Recall that Eastbay campground taught us the difference between an RV campground and an RV park. We were on our way to Sagitawah RV park in Whitecourt, AB today. The website made it out to be a nice place. That’s the thing about websites, things don’t always end up as they seem. This was one of those places. The back section of the campground had a “Breaking Bad” feeling to it.

We were fortunate that we were on the end of one of the camper rows (not in the back section) so only had one neighbor directly next to us. They were a couple of hippies in a newer camper van. The guy had on a tie-dye T-shirt and possibly Birkenstocks (full disclosure, Tom and I both wear Birkenstocks – they are the best). They were nice and similarly, on their way to Alaska. We settled in and cooked up the usual (Patagonia Provisions Chili over Mac n’ Cheese). We planned on heading out early the next morning and hoped that our next campground would be better.

On to the next!
