The Big Move: Day 5

Oh, Canada!

Today was the day we were leaving the lower 48 behind us. So long, contiguous states! More pronghorn, more cattle farms, but it was a nice drive. We came up on the Sugar Shack diner in Rudyard, MT just in time for lunch. I highly recommend it! The place had such an awesome vibe with friendly patrons and staff. Best burgers we had with fresh fries and onion rings, not to mention the delicious chocolate malt. Mmmm!

Now that we were properly refueled it was on to Canada. We had prepared before the trip to make sure we had all veterinary records required, travel documents, identification, and COVID vaccination cards. Our hope was to have a smooth crossing, and we did. We made it to Gold Springs campground early that evening and were able to relax again. The campground is right on the Milk River with level sites and nice people. It was quiet, roomy, and relaxing. We found out that you had to pay for showers (a Loonie = 3 minutes; a Toonie = 6) and were bummed because a hot shower would be nice, of course. We shrugged and said, “Well, I guess only one of us can shower tomorrow” since we only had one Loonie. There was a group of young boys (maybe 10 years old) in the office that we had been chatting with about their fishing and they must have overheard us because one of the boys ran out the office after we had left and gave us Toonie so I could shower the next day. He was so thoughtful! The kindness of Canadians was shining. Kid, your parents should be proud of you.

Our camper neighbors were so nice, and we had a nice visit with them. After settling in for the evening, we caught up on the Obi-Wan series (remember, we are Star Wars nerds) then slept great. It was a rainy start to the morning, but we got a nice run in with Clementine before breaking camp and moving on. Two nice campgrounds in a row, how lucky! What we didn’t know was that the “nice campground” luck was about to run out.
